Milk is used to make many tasty desserts in India, among which kheer is a prominent name. It is traditional in this country to cook on the birthdays of people, as it is considered to be an auspicious food. It is also offered in religious worship in many households and temples, as it is purely vegetarian food. It is prepared by boiling several ingredients in milk.   • Generally, rice and vermicelli are added to the boiling milk, for making kheer. Some people also make kheer with grated vegetables, like potatoes and carrots. Broken wheat, sweet corn, sago or tapioca may also be used for making delicious kheer. Hence, a large amount of carbohydrate is available from kheer preparation, which is useful for growing children.
  • Since milk is the main ingredient of this food, it is a rich source of protein. It supplies all kinds of amino acids that help in generating muscle fibres and heal wounded body cells very fast.
